Introduction


The Science and Mathematics Talent Program (SMTP) seeks to harness the talents of our students in science and mathematics. Students enrolled in the program may opt to be in the Science, Mathematics or Defence Science (DS) research module. The program is supported by a group of teacher mentors and consultants from various institutions of higher learning and research.


Objectives


The Science and Math Talent Programme seeks to:
  • develop pupils' passion for Mathematics, Science or Defence Science
  • stretch pupils' scientific or computing abilities
  • develop pupils' communication skills in science and technology
  • develop pupils' critical and creative thinking skills
  • develop pupils' research skills
  • help pupils cultivate the habit of reading books/articles/journals in science and technology
  • help pupils develop life skills: interpersonal, time management etc.
  • talent spot pupils to engage in high level research through A*STAR or industrial attachments by doing Mathematics, Science or Defence Science projects


Programme Structure


(A) Academic module
  • All SMTP students will be doing an enriched science curriculum. They will be stretched in both in breadth and depth where possible for all the three sciences; physics, chemistry and biology.
  • All SMTP students will also be doing integrated studies modules. These modules will be thematic and they will integrate the knowledge from the three sciences and mathematics. The themes for these modules will be based on contemporary issues challenging the world in recent times.

(B) Research module
All S3 will attend a basic research module in Term 1 and Term 2 (up to mid-Term 2). The structure of the research module is as follows:
  • SMTP (Maths), SMTP (Science) and SMTP (DS) students will attend sessions in the subject area they have opted.
    • Content of the maths and science modules will include
    • Crafting research idea/questions - Sources of ideas, current trends in research, feasible areas of research
    • Experimental design
    • Data analysis and presentation
    • Poster design for competition
    • Project presentation by HD or D winners of Projects Competition
    • Writing a research paper
    • SMTP (DS) students will undergo a programming and hands-on training in S3 and then embark on research projects in S4.
  • In addition to the above, there will also be research training sessions together with the rest of students in CSE. These sessions will provide training in research skills common to all special programs.
  • Students will also have the opportunity to meet with external speakers who will share with them their research experience.

(C) The SMTP Research paper
  • All SMTP students are required to do one Experimental Research (Cat 1), Innovation (Cat 3), Maths (Cat 9a) or IT (Cat 9b) project. SMTP (Science) and SMTP (Maths) students will do this project in S3 while the SMTP (DS) students will do theirs in S4.
  • SMTP (Science and Maths) students will commence on their projects upon completion of the research module in Term 1. Students will form groups of 3 students on their own under the supervision of a teacher-mentor of their choice.
  • All SMTP projects should participate in the annual Projects Competition organized by the school. Grades obtained will be converted to ACE points for relevant subject(s).
  • In S4, an SMTP (Science or Maths) student can choose to do a project in any other categories if he does not wish to carry out or continue with a project in Cat 1, 3, 9a. All SMTP students are required to submit a research paper on his project (experimental research, innovation, Maths, IT) done in S3. Each project group will submit one research paper.
  • The research paper will be graded by the group's mentor in 2 stages one in S3 and another in S4. Grades will be reflected in the report book as a subject and will contribute to the MSG at the end of S3 and S4 if a grade of A1 is obtained.
  • Marks obtained from annual Projects Competition and Research Paper assessments will be computed to for consideration for eligibility for H3 Research in JC1.

(D) Resources (Facilities & Funding)
  • Young Explorers' Fund will be awarded to projects that show good potential to enable the purchase of experimental materials not available in the school. This fund will be capped at $2000 per group.
  • Laboratory facilities at the Science Research Centre will be open to all SMTP students from 2pm to 7pm daily (Mondays to Fridays).

(E) External activities
Students who perform well in their research projects will have the opportunites to participate in the following external activities:
  • Competitions: Singapore Science and Engineering Fair, Biotech Fair, Crystal Growing Competition, Singapore Mathematics Project Festival Competition, National Software Competition, etc.
  • Overseas conferences: London International Youth Science Forum, Japan Ritsmeikan Science Fair, Shanghai International Youth Science and Tech Expo; Youth Science Symposium (Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore), Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists Congress etc.
  • Attachments: Nanyang Research Program (NTU); Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN - A*STAR); National University of Singapore (mentorship projects);Young Defence Scientist Program (DSTA)
